A child must be able to touch and move, to smell and feel and taste and listen and see the world to learn.  The Montessori materials and activities are designed to be concrete, manipulative ways of learning about different aspects of the world. 

Self-Regulated

A child repeats activities until they are mastered to the child’s satisfaction.  

The Montessori schedule has long blocks of time for the child to work, uninterrupted, as long as he/she would like to concentrate.

Intrigued

A child learns that which he finds fascinating.  

The Montessori environment and the invitations from the guide are designed to make the hundreds of materials and lessons delightful and intriguing. 

Motivated

A child is driven from within to know the world, leading to curiosity and dynamic learning.  

The Montessori environment is full of materials to explore, carefully chosen to provide learning in specific areas.

Guided

A child is self-educating, constructing knowledge and mental images through his/her direct experiences of the world.  

The Montessori guide does not teach, but provides opportunities for rich learning experiences and guidance on problem-solving, asking questions, and doing research.

Evolving

A child changes through time, experience, and personal development. 

The Montessori environments are each designed for a limited range of developmental stages, and within each, the environment and materials may be chosen according to the needs of each individual.
